INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION

IPSC on the Global Stage

The International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) is recognized globally as a leading governing body in the field of practical shooting sports, encompassing disciplines such as handgun, rifle, shotgun, mini-rifle, and action air. It operates in over 105 countries, making it one of the most extensive sport shooting organizations.

IPSC is also a member of key international sport governance organizations, such as the Alliance of Independent Recognized Members of Sport (AIMS), which is endorsed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Additionally, IPSC actively engages in events like the SportAccord World Sport & Business Summit, where it showcases its disciplines and promotes its mission. This visibility and participation are part of its broader efforts to gain Olympic recognition. The organization aligns with international standards, including anti-doping policies under the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), to ensure ethical governance and fair play.

What is AIMS?

The Alliance of Independent Recognized Members of Sport (AIMS) was established in 2009 to represent sports federations that were not yet recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). AIMS acts as a crucial organization within the global sports ecosystem, helping sports federations gain recognition and move towards integration into the Olympic movement.

Founding and Purpose

AIMS was originally founded by non-IOC recognized members of the GAISF (Global Association of International Sports Federations), which was later known as SportAccord. AIMS serves as an umbrella organization that provides a pathway for its member federations to work toward IOC recognition. In 2016, AIMS itself achieved full recognition from the IOC, marking a significant milestone in its role as the fourth key umbrella organization alongside the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF), the Association of Winter Olympic Federations (AIOWF), and the Association of IOC Recognised International Sports Federations (ARISF).

AIMS’s Role in the Olympic Movement

AIMS plays a critical role in the Olympic movement by providing a platform for its member federations to work toward IOC recognition. The process of recognition is carried out by a membership commission   is chaired by AIMS and includes representatives from ASOIF, AIOWF, ARISF and the IOC . This process helps ensure that sports federations meet the required standards to be recognized by the IOC and, in some cases, become part of the Olympic Games themselves.

AIMS’s role as a Stakeholder in SportAccord and its active participation in events like the yearly SportAccord Convention and IF Forum further solidify its importance. Through these platforms, AIMS members are given the opportunity to collaborate, engage, and integrate into the larger sports community, ultimately increasing their global visibility.

What is SportAccord?

SportAccord is a global sports event organisation based in the Olympic Capital of Lausanne, Switzerland, governed by stakeholders representing over 120 International Federations governing Olympic and non-Olympic sports.

What is WOF?

WOF (the Winter Olympic Federations) is made up of the International Sports Federations which govern a winter sport featured on the Olympic programme.

It encourages cooperation between its members. WOF is the qualified representative body that deals with specific questions connected with winter sports in general, and the Olympic Games in particular. WOF is also responsible for recommending winter sports representatives for the commissions of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and other international organisations. Among other tasks, WOF deals with the coordination of matters of common interest between the winter sports, and the submission to the IOC of proposals regarding the distribution of the share of Olympic revenues.

What is ASOIF?

ASOIF’s Mission

ASOIF’s mission is to unite, promote and support the Summer Olympic International Federations (IFs); to preserve their autonomy, while advocating for their common interests and goals; to act as an added value provider to the member IFs and the Olympic Movement at large.

ASOIF’s Role

ASOIF’s role is to serve and represent the Summer Olympic IFs in the most competent, articulate and professional manner on issues of common interest in the Summer Olympic Games, Summer Youth Olympic Games and the Olympic Movement, and on any other matters deemed necessary by the IFs.

Mission of the International Federations

The IFs have the responsibility and duty to manage and to monitor the everyday running of the world’s various sports, disciplines, including the delivery of their events during the Olympic Games and Youth Olympic Games, and the supervision of the development of athletes practising these sports at every level. Each IF governs its sport at a global level and ensures its promotion and development. They monitor the everyday administration of their sports and guarantee the regular organisation of competitions as well as respect for the rules of fair play.

All members come together once a year in a General Assembly. The General Assembly usually precedes a joint meeting between the International Olympic Committee and the IFs where a multitude of topics are discussed in the common interests of the Olympic Movement.

ASOIF is governed by an executive body, the Council, which consists of eight individual members, all of which are leaders of Summer Olympic IFs, and the ASOIF Executive Director.

The ASOIF Scretariat is located in Lausanne, Switzerland and is led by the ASOIF Executive Director and Deputy Executive Director.

What is ARISF?

ARISF represents, through its Members, many hundred million individual members and many billions of fans all over the World.

IPSC’s Standing in the International Sporting Community

The international arena of shooting sports up to recent times was solely represented by the ISSF by taking part in the Olympic  Games and being recognized by governments worldwide. Being part of the Olympic Games results in a lot of support, specially
financial support, and in many cases additional support through legal provisions for the ISSF shooting disciplines and shooting ranges.

By bringing IPSC to this highest level of recognition in the world of shooting sports, there can be no doubt that now there are two different international federations representing the sport of shooting: the traditional static shooting sport regulated by ISSF and the dynamic form of shooting sport, represented by IPSC.

Through our AIMS and SportAccord memberships, we have achieved that and we will continue with our efforts of being accepted and recognized worldwide.
